MARATHON PARTICIPATION In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, there was a major increase in the participation in road racing. The increase was directly reflected in marathons, that is, until 1983. During the period of rapid growth the number of marathons increased significantly and for a while race directors could plan on their fields doubling each year. It was not uncommon for nearly half of the field to be first-time marathoners.
